HSSEQ Coordinator

JOB SUMMARY

Join us as an HSSEQ Coordinator and make a real impact. In this pivotal role, you will empower our teams and leaders with the knowledge, guidance, and support they need to work safely and confidently.

You will help drive a proactive, high‑performing health and safety culture at site level, ensuring we meet and exceed both company expectations and statutory responsibilities.

You will act as a bridge between engineering designs and the final product that reaches the customer. Your focus is on minimizing waste (scrap), preventing recalls, and ensuring that every unit rolling off the line is identical in its adherence to specifications.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES / TASKS

Health, Safety & Technical Guidance

• Expert Advisory: Act as the primary point of contact for HSSEQ guidance, providing professional advice to management and staff in alignment with legislation and company policies.
• On-Site Oversight: Provide direct HSE oversight for project teams to maintain standards and ensure strict adherence to the company’s Golden Rules.
• Project Integration: Provide HSSEQ input throughout all phases of project planning and execution to ensure safety requirements are embedded from the start.

Risk Management & Incident Investigation

• Risk Assessment: Lead risk assessment workshops and support the development of Method Statements, Safe Systems of Work (SSoW), and Task-Based Risk Assessments (TBRA).
• Incident Analysis: Act as the lead investigator for accidents, incidents, and near-misses; utilize Root Cause Analysis (RCA) to implement corrective actions and prevent recurrence.
• Safety Promotion: Foster a "Safety First" culture through behavioural safety initiatives, toolbox talks, safety briefings, and safety "quick shares."
• Expert Advisory: Act as the primary point of contact for HSSEQ guidance, providing professional advice to management and staff in alignment with legislation and company policies.
• Legal Horizon Scanning: Proactively monitor and interpret changes to HSSEQ legislation, industry standards, and best practices; ensure these updates are integrated into company policies and local operations.
• On-Site Oversight: Provide direct HSE oversight for project teams to maintain standards and ensure strict adherence to the company’s Golden Rules.
• Project Integration: Provide HSSEQ input throughout all phases of project planning and execution to ensure safety requirements are embedded from the start.

Compliance, Auditing & Quality Assurance

• Internal Audit Leadership: Schedule, lead, and execute a robust Internal Audit Program across all departments.
• System Maintenance: Support the continuous improvement of management systems aligned with ISO 45001, ISO 14001, and ISO 9001.
• Inspections & Audits: Conduct regular site inspections and internal audits. Coordinate external certification audits and manage non-conformances and CAPAs (Corrective and Preventive Actions).
• Contractor Management: Oversee contractor HSSEQ documentation reviews and monitor on-site performance.
• Equipment Calibration: Manage schedules to ensure all measuring tools (gauges, scales) are accurate, certified, and calibrated.
• Legal Register: Maintain and update the Legal Register, ensuring the organization remains compliant with all statutory obligations.
• Legal appointments: Manage and track all mandatory legal appointments under the Health and Safety Act.

Production & Quality Control

• Production Oversight: Monitor production lines to ensure machinery is calibrated and operators strictly follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
• In-Process & Final Inspection: Perform physical checks, measurements, and tests during assembly to identify defects early.
• Non-Conformance Management: "Quarantine" failing batches and lead the decision-making process for scrapping, reworking, or returning items to suppliers.
• Waste Reduction: Minimize scrap and prevent product recalls, ensuring every unit meets exact specifications.

Environmental & Sustainability Management

• Zero Waste to Landfill Leadership: Drive the strategic objective to achieve and maintain "Zero Waste to Landfill" status. Identify all waste streams and implement the Waste Hierarchy (Eliminate, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Recover) to divert 100% of waste from landfills.
• Waste Stream Auditing: Conduct comprehensive waste audits to identify the source of all scrap and packaging, negotiating with suppliers to reduce incoming waste.
• Circular Economy Initiatives: Partner with specialist waste contractors to find innovative recovery or energy-from-waste solutions for non-recyclable materials.
• Environmental Controls: Oversee impact controls, including pollution prevention and environmental risk control in line with ISO 14001.
• Sustainability & Carbon: Lead carbon footprint monitoring, energy efficiency projects, and manage sustainability reporting for the Board.

Reporting & Performance Monitoring

• Data Analytics: Maintain the SHEQ statistics dashboard and monitor performance trends.
• KPI Reporting: Provide monthly reports on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), sharing lessons learned and leading safety campaigns.

Document Control & Administration

• Record Management: Maintain and organize the master document register, ensuring all SHEQ policies, procedures, and forms are current and accessible.
• Version Control: Ensure that only the latest approved versions of documents (SOPs, Risk Assessments, Manuals) are in use across the site and production lines.
• Archiving & Retention: Manage the secure storage and retention of safety records, training logs, and audit reports in compliance with legal and ISO requirements.
• Distribution: Oversee the controlled distribution of new or revised HSSEQ documentation to relevant stakeholders and departments.

Supplier & Contractor Management

• Supplier HSSEQ Evaluation: Lead the HSSEQ qualification process for new suppliers and vendors. Conduct technical assessments of their safety records, quality standards, and environmental impact.
• Vendor Auditing: Perform periodic site audits of key suppliers to ensure their production processes and safety cultures align with company standards.
• Contractor Oversight: Oversee contractor HSSEQ documentation reviews (RAMS/COSHH) and monitor on-site performance through regular "safety walks" and performance reviews.
• Supply Chain Sustainability: Negotiate with suppliers to minimize incoming packaging and waste, supporting the "Zero Waste to Landfill" strategic objective.

PREVIOUS/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/ ADDITIONAL SKILLS & DETAILS

• Industry Experience: A minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in a HSSEQ role in manufacturing/industrial environment.
• Audit Track Record: Proven experience in transitioning or maintaining integrated management systems (IMS).
• Soft Skills: High level of emotional intelligence with the ability to influence behaviour at both the shopfloor and executive levels.
• Communication: Excellent communication skills for training, advising staff, and reporting at all levels.
• Technical Writing: Ability to draft clear, concise Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and technical safety alerts.
• Emergency Response: Experience in coordinating emergency response drills and liaising with local authorities.

CANDIDATE PROFILE: QUALIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL SKILLS

• Education: A Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Environmental Health, Quality Management or a related field.
• Professional Certification: Registered with a professional body (e.g., SAIOSH, or SACPCMP).
• Technical Proficiencies: Hands-on experience with ISO 9001, 14001, or 45001). Internal/Lead Auditor experience / Proficiency in SHEQ Management Software (e.g. Enablon, IsoMetrix, or similar) and the Microsoft Office Suite. /Strong understanding of relevant SHEQ legislation.
