Honoring Hispanic Heritage Month with Team BIC

Every year, from September 15th to October 15th, we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month — a time to honor the vibrant histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic and Latinx Americans whose roots trace back to Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

The HOLA BIC employee resource group (ERG) is one of six ERGs at BIC, whose mission aims to create a diverse and inclusive culture where all team members can thrive. When asked to name something that defines Hispanic culture, HOLA said food is often what brings members of this community together!

As we honor Hispanic Heritage Month, join us celebrating the diverse backgrounds and cultures of our team members, as they showcase dishes that highlight their rich cultural heritage:

Pedro Ribeiro, Finance Manager

“Brazilian cuisine is very rich, and among dozens of typical national dishes, the one that stands out for me is Feijoada. I'm from Sao Paulo, and traditionally Feijoada day is Saturday. So that was often the day to get the family together, to have lunch with the people we love.

For it to be perfect, it must be accompanied by Farofa, fried Banana and a good Guarana soft drink.”

Dish: Feijoada. A traditional Brazilian stew made with black beans and pork, often including sausage and bacon. It’s typically served with white rice, collard greens, farofa (toasted cassava flour, mixed with onions, garlic, and bacon), fried banana and orange slices.

“My entire family loves mariscos (seafood), and aguachile is an easy recipe that we can prepare to enjoy a day together in Mexico. Summers in Connecticut have been really special with aguachile, friends from different nationalities have fallen in love with this dish.”

Dish: Aguachile. A traditional Mexican dish made with shrimp marinated in lime juice, blended with fresh ingredients like cucumber, red onion, and cilantro, then spiced with serrano or jalapeño peppers. It’s typically served with tostadas or tortilla chips, making it perfect for a fresh and flavorful summer meal.

Anthony (Tony) SanMiguel, Key Account Manager, E-Commerce

“Mexican Rice has a lot of meaning to me because it's a strong connection to my roots. It's my dad's recipe—one he learned from his mom, who brought it from her family in Mexico. Whenever my family makes it, it reminds me of him, which is funny because my dad says it reminds him of his mom. It's nice to have family foods that make you feel closer to each other.”

Dish: Mexican Rice. A traditional Mexican side dish made with long-grain white rice sautéed with onion, green peppers, and seasoned with Knorr consommé and cumin. Often served with chopped cilantro, this dish is simple yet flavorful, passed down through generations.
