From Category Brand Manager to Regional Marketing Manager: How Joel Kouadio Drives Growth Across West & Central Africa
True internal mobility is a dynamic process—an invitation to explore your potential, build diverse skill sets, and expand your scope as you grow. Our "Joy of the Journey" series celebrates the freedom to design a career path that moves with your ambitions.
Nobody embodies this principle better than Joel Kouadio, Marketing Manager for the West and Central Africa (WACA) region, based in Ivory Coast. Over his five-year tenure, Joel has charted a remarkable trajectory from managing single-category brand initiatives to leading regional brand and trade marketing teams, illustrating how BIC World actively invests in talent and fosters leadership across high-growth markets.
The Strategic Timeline: A Leadership Trajectory
- July 2021: Joined BIC World as Brand Manager Stationery.
- Category Expansion: Transitioned to Brand Manager for Lighters and Shavers, managing his first direct report and broadening his portfolio expertise.
- Present: Promoted to Marketing Manager WACA, leading the regional Brand and Trade Marketing teams.
The Reality Shift: From Category Focus to Regional Scale
On day one at BIC World, Joel’s focus was grounded in single-category management within a lean operational setup. Today, his day-to-day work directly steers cross-functional collaboration, team expansion, and structured regional execution across West and Central Africa.
"The biggest difference is definitely the scale. I started with a very small team and just a few basic processes. Now that the WACA team has widened so much, my day-to-day reality involves a much heavier focus on cross-functional collaboration and putting stronger processes in place to keep everything running smoothly."
This steady vertical progression was driven by a deep desire to step out of his comfort zone and grow as a leader.
"Stepping into the Marketing Manager role was driven by my desire to grow as a leader. It offered a fantastic opportunity to expand my experience in team management and collaborate cross-functionally across the Africa region. I was always looking to push myself out of my comfort zone, and this pivot provided the perfect challenge to hone my skills and make a bigger impact."
An Organizational Safety Net Built on Team Empowerment
Navigating a transition into regional management requires more than individual ambition—it takes an organizational framework that actively advocates for internal talent. For Joel, the key catalysts were strategic category rotation and structured leadership development programs.
"Before taking on the Marketing Manager role, my manager transitioned me from the Stationery category to the Brand Manager role for Lighters and Shavers, helping me deepen my knowledge across our broader portfolio."
Additionally, Joel leveraged BIC World’s tailored developmental tools to prepare for higher leadership responsibilities:
"With the support of the HR team, I completed BIC’s Illuminate program—a leadership development journey designed specifically for our People Leaders. This training equipped me with the essential tools and techniques not only to manage a team effectively but also to propel myself toward excellence in my future leadership responsibilities."
Making a Meaningful Regional Contribution
At the core of the "Joy of the Journey" is the deep fulfillment that comes from knowing your everyday effort shapes business outcomes and enriches local communities. In his regional leadership capacity, Joel works at the intersection of strategic alignment and community impact.
"My role focuses on taking BIC World's global category strategy and adapting it for the WACA region, ensuring it aligns with local realities regarding price, packaging, portfolio, and distribution. My main priority is making sure our high-quality products are accessible, nd 'Easy to buy and Easy to choose' for every consumer in the region."
Beyond commercial objectives, Joel finds immense purpose in driving community initiatives:
"The most rewarding part of my journey has been the tangible impact we make beyond our core business. A perfect example is working with external partners on our Velleda loyalty program to improve learning conditions in schools across Ivory Coast. Knowing that the work we do every day directly benefits local communities and future generations gives immense meaning to my career here."
Joel's Advice: Stay Curious and Own Your Impact
When reflecting on his leadership evolution, Joel emphasizes that a long-term, rewarding career requires a healthy mix of personal initiative, continuous learning, and staying true to oneself. For prospective talent or team members planning their next steps, he offers explicit advice:
"Stay curious and always look for ways to make a meaningful impact. BIC World gives you the autonomy to truly own your work and drive real change, both for the business and the communities we serve. Keep the consumer at the heart of your strategies, take advantage of the leadership training offered, and don't be afraid to bring your authentic self to work every day. If you show dedication, the opportunities to grow here are limitless."
