Joy of the Journey: How Christine Vondran Navigated a Non-Linear, High-Impact Career at BIC World
At BIC World, we often talk about career growth not as a rigid ladder, but as a dynamic journey full of exploration. True internal mobility isn’t just about moving up; it’s about moving laterally, expanding your skill set, tackling special projects, and pivoting when business needs to evolve.
Nobody exemplifies this "Joy of the Journey" ethos better than Christine, Team Lead Target NAM.
Over her decade-long tenure, Christine has successfully navigated a remarkable mix of vertical advancements, strategic lateral pivots, and cross-functional leadership assignments. We sat down with her to discuss her journey, how transparent leadership fueled her transitions, and why the best career advice might involve looking sideways instead of just looking up.
The Timeline: From a Regional Focus to Global Strategy
Christine joined the BIC World community in 2015 as a Key Account Manager for Midwest Convenience Retailers and Distributors. Since then, her journey has been a masterclass in building adaptable commercial skills:
- 2015: Joined as Key Account Manager (Convenience)
- 2016: Promoted to Convenience National Account Manager (managed retail giants like 7-Eleven and Circle K)
- 2019: Stepped into a cross-functional stretch assignment as the interim Business Development Manager for Lighters to provide maternity leave coverage
- 2020: Promoted to Convenience Team Lead, National Accounts
- 2022: Pivoted to Team Lead for the Target account
- 2024: Stepped into an innovative new frontier as Head of Business Development for Rocketbook
- 2026: Repivoted back to the core business to lead the Target Team once again
"Following BIC World's commitment to refocus on our core business, the decision was made to exit the Rocketbook business," Christine notes. "After two years working with Rocketbook, rejoining the Target team felt like the most natural and rewarding way to reacquaint myself with North America Markets (NAM) and our core portfolio."
The Reality Shift: Shifting from Execution to Strategy
On day one at BIC World, Christine was deeply embedded on the frontline of retail execution. Today, her day-to-day work influences the entire commercial ecosystem.
"As a Key Account Manager early on, I worked directly with customers, selling category strategies and collaborating in real time with retailers to find pockets of growth," Christine says. "Today, I am part of the team responsible for actually developing those overarching strategies and defining both our short- and long-term business objectives."
Despite the step up to macro-level strategy, Christine hasn’t lost touch with what she loves most: "What I enjoy most is that I still have the opportunity to work directly with one of our largest NAM customers, partnering with them to workshop solutions and drive growth in real time."
A Culture Built on Transparency and Trust
Navigating multiple pivots requires more than just personal ambition—it requires an organizational safety net. For Christine, the catalyst for her growth was transparent, and highly supportive leadership.
"My manager and leadership team were incredibly transparent about the trajectory of the business and where they saw future growth opportunities," Christine shares. "Through honest conversations and regular feedback, they helped me recognize how my customer-facing experience and commercial skill set could add value in a more strategic capacity, supporting BIC World's long-term objectives."
This continuous dialogue gave her the confidence to step into unfamiliar territories—like shifting from legacy lighter and stationery categories to a digital-physical hybrid like Rocketbook—knowing her core commercial competencies were highly valued and transferable.
Making a Meaningful Contribution
At the heart of the "Joy of the Journey" is the impact our team members make every day. In her current role as Team Lead for Target, Christine manages one of BIC World’s most strategic retail partnerships. Her team’s efforts directly impact millions of consumers.
"I have the opportunity to make a meaningful contribution by helping shape category and brand strategies that ultimately improve the experience for the Target guest," says Christine. "Whether it's identifying assortment opportunities, optimizing promotions, or bringing innovation to market, I work to ensure we are delivering the right products at the right time."
Christine’s Advice: Embrace the Lateral Move
When asked what has surprised her most about her tenured career at BIC World, Christine points directly to how fluid skills can be if you have an open mind.
"What has surprised me most is how transferable these experiences are. Many of the skills I developed working directly with retailers have enabled me to contribute at a broader level—shaping strategy, leading teams, and driving growth, all while keeping the consumer front of mind," she says.
For internal team members looking to grow, or external candidates wondering if they will get pigeonholed at BIC World, Christine offers a vital piece of advice:
"Be open to opportunities that expand your skills and perspective, even if they aren't the most obvious next step. Some of the most valuable growth comes from taking on lateral moves, special projects, or cross-functional assignments. At BIC World, those experiences expose you to different parts of the business, build new relationships, and prepare you for future leadership opportunities. They can be just as impactful as a traditional promotion path."
