Small Ideas, Global Impact: How the BICUp Global Awards Fuel a Culture of Everyday Innovation
Have you ever looked at a process, a package, or a piece of equipment and thought, “There’s a better way to do this”?
At BIC World, we don’t just hope our team members ask that question—we give them the platform to answer it. We firmly believe that the next groundbreaking idea shouldn’t have to fight its way through corporate red tape. Innovation isn’t tied to a specific job title, department, or office; it’s a mindset that lives in the everyday actions of our people.
To prove it, we recently gathered at our iconic BIC Violex manufacturing facility in Athens, Greece, to celebrate our second annual BICUp Global Awards.
What is BICUp?
At its heart, *BICUp is built on a simple but powerful premise: empowering people who see an opportunity to make something better to choose to act on it. It’s our internal incubator where team members challenge the status quo, solve real-world problems, and continuously look for ways to improve how we work by bringing frontline ideas to life.
Whether it’s enhancing workplace safety, simplifying a complex process, reducing waste, driving sustainability, or strengthening team collaboration, BICUp ensures that local ideas have a direct pathway to creating massive global impact.
This year’s awards brought together idea contributors from 13 different sites across the globe. The energy was amplified by inspiring messages of appreciation from our CEO, Rob Versloot, and our Chief People and Workplace Officer, Alexandra Malak, reminding us all that at BIC, your insights are valued from day one.
Meet the 2026 BICUp Global Award Winners 🏆
From an incredible pool of thousands of grassroots ideas, five outstanding projects were recognized with Global Awards, each directly inspired by our core values.
These winners represent the ultimate expression of our spirit of ingenuity at BIC World, proving that when you bring your knack for creative problem-solving to work, the organization stands ready to scale your impact.
The North Star Award
Celebrating innovative solutions that advance safety, sustainability, and integrity while supporting long-term company growth.
- Winner: William Sousa, Project Manager (BIC Amazonia, Brazil)
- The Idea: William reimagined our lighter packaging to make it significantly more sustainable. By optimizing the design, minimizing raw material use, reducing film thickness, and reorganizing how lighters are packed into cartons, he successfully eliminated intermediate packaging and drastically reduced freight emissions.
The Spark Award
Recognizing solutions that demonstrate ingenuity and have the power to transform the business by unlocking new capabilities.
- Winner: Anastasios Vogklis, Mechanical Maintenance Technician (BIC Violex, Greece)
- The Idea: Anastasios found a brilliant way to extend the lifespan of essential manufacturing forming molds. By machining worn surfaces and installing custom spacer flanges to compensate for lost material, he allowed the molds to return to a stable, "like new" operation—saving resources and maximizing engineering efficiency.
The Blueprint Award
Honoring scalable, high-integrity ideas that can be seamlessly replicated across different global sites.
- Winner: Joel Caron, Building & Utilities Supervisor (BIC Rasoirs, France)
- The Idea: Joel tackled energy efficiency with zero production risk. He designed a system to cool factory air compressors using a geothermal "Canadian well," successfully avoiding over-temperature safety shutdowns during hot summer months without ever stopping production.
The Cristal-Clear Award
Rewarding ideas that cut through operational complexity, eliminate waste, and make the smartest solution feel effortless.
- Winner: Nourhene Jabberi, Quality Inspector (BIC Bizerte, Tunisia)
- The Idea: Focused on reducing raw material waste, Nourhene looked closely at our felt-pen production line. By precision-adjusting the distance of the marking paper feed from 15 mm to 9 mm, Nourhene managed to drastically cut down the consumption of marking paper rolls with a beautifully simple adjustment.
The Bridge-Builder Award
Highlighting cross-functional ideas that demonstrate the undeniable power of collaboration and shared ownership.
- Winner: Brian Ngovi, Process Assembly Optimizer (BIC East Africa, Kenya)
- The Idea: Brian saw an opportunity to optimize break-time operations on our shaver production line. By collaborating with and training the Graphics team to manage minor machine stoppages during breaks on the classic shaver welding machines, the team boosted daily output by an astonishing 8,000 additional units.
