JOB SUMMARY

The Millwright is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of all machinery and equipment within a manufacturing environment. This role requires a strong mechanical and electrical aptitude and the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues, ensuring that all machinery operates efficiently and meets quality standards. The Millwright will play a key role in minimizing downtime, optimizing machine performance, and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives. Additionally, the role involves maintaining safety compliance, documenting maintenance activities, and collaborating with other team members to drive operational excellence. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in both mechanical and electrical, particularly with automated machinery, and possess strong problem-solving skills to address challenges and improve processes.

  • Meet Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to machine uptime, maintenance response times, and repair quality.
  • Monitor and report on machine efficiency, maintenance costs, and parts usage to drive continuous improvement.
  • Ensure adherence to scheduled maintenance plans and prompt resolution of unplanned downtime events.
  • Meet HSE Objectives.
  • Meet Housekeeping objectives.
  • Participate in BIC UP.
  • Actively support team members during breakdowns or large maintenance tasks.

2.2 Machinery and Equipment Maintenance

Key Performance Indicator

  • Perform routine inspections and preventative maintenance on the machines to ensure continuous operation and minimize downtime.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical issues, including hydraulic and pneumatic systems, motors, electrical and control systems and other moving parts.
  • Replace or repair defective parts, ensuring that all repairs meet quality standards and operational specifications.
  • Assemble and install machines and related mechanical and electrical systems according to technical drawings and specifications.
  • Ensure precise alignment and adherence to operational requirements to achieve optimal machine performance.
  • Installation and dismantling machinery.
  • Use tools to manufacture, modify, and repair metal components.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings.
  • Complete all scheduled PM tasks on time with 95% adherence to standards.
  • Gain basic proficiency in maintaining both primary equipment and auxiliary systems.
  • Understand the function of the components on the machine and how to repair it.

2.3 Operational Support

Key Performance Indicator

  • Collaborate with production teams to ensure smooth machine operation and minimal downtime.
  • Must be aware of the hourly output targets of various machines and equipment, to achieve the highest possible output figures.
  • Strive to maintain optimum settings.
  • Report on any problems related to the non-performance of machinery and equipment to the team leader.
  • Assist with operator and production supervisor training on all machinery and equipment and inform them about any standard procedural changes.
  • Ensure that all planned machines are running at the end of their shift.
  • Assembling or dismantling, installing, and testing of all machinery and equipment for correct operation.
  • Must adhere to safety standards, policies and procedures.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks to correct potential issues.
  • Use manually operated lifting and moving equipment to move heavy parts.
  • Participate in Autonomous Maintenance Activities, tagging and operator/technician training.
  • 95% Participation in Autonomous Maintenance activities – Handle tagging, operator training.
  • Identify and report at least 2 potential issues before they lead to downtime per month.

2.4 Problem Solving

Key Performance Indicator

  • Identifying problematic parts of the machinery and equipment by applying analytical fault-finding.
  • Repairing problematic parts of machinery and equipment by making temporary repairs, making new parts, or installing new parts.
  • Analyse recurring problems and implement effective solutions to prevent future breakdowns.
  • Use root cause analysis techniques to diagnose complex mechanical failures and develop long-term corrective actions.
  • Collaborate with other team members to brainstorm and implement process improvements that enhance machine reliability and efficiency.
  • Document findings from RCA investigations and ensure lessons learned are shared across the team.
  • Maintain detailed records of maintenance and repairs.
  • Resolve breakdowns within target time (according to complexity) for equipment. (Basic <20min, Intermediate <60min, Advance <180min).
  • Take part in at least 1 Root Cause Analysis per quarter.
  • Participate in Gemba walk.

2.5 Safety, Health and Environment

Key Performance Indicator

  • Adhere to all safety guidelines and regulatory standards, ensuring a safe work environment.
  • Follow Lockout/Tagout/Try-out (LOTOTO) procedures when performing maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and ISO quality standards.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and maintain compliance documentation for machinery, equipment and tools.
  • Participate in safety training sessions and contribute to continuous safety improvement initiatives.
  • Follow safety protocols with Zero incidents.
  • Have awareness of the unsafe act/condition to raise at least 1 near miss per month.
  • Ensure 100% adherence to LOTOTO as set out by the policy.
  • Present and discuss at least 1 safety topic with the team per month.

2.6 Documentation and Reporting

Key Performance Indicator

  • Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs performed, and any machine modifications using the CMMS system.
  • Provide timely reports to the team leader and collaborate on preventive maintenance plans.
  • Ensure the production sheet is signed off upon completion of any work performed on machinery and equipment.
  • Correctly, timely, accurately and consistently complete CMMS entries for each task performed on any machinery and/or equipment.
  • Written handovers to be completed at the end of every shift.
  • Escalation procedure to be followed if the breakdown time exceeds the stipulated threshold.
  • Provide timely and clear updates on tasks and challenges during handover.
  • Maintain 100% accuracy in maintenance records: Production sheets filled, CMMS tasks completed, Spare parts booked out.

2.7 Continuous Improvement

Key Performance Indicator

  • Suggest validated improvement opportunities to machine processes and recommend modifications/upgrades to improve efficiency and quality using the available systems and procedures.
  • Stay updated on the latest mechanical and electrical technologies and advancements relevant to machinery and equipment.
  • Participating in BICUP, give ideas/implement/evaluate at least 2 per month.
  • Propose at least 2 processes or efficiency improvement ideas per year.

2.8 Built-in Quality Assurance

Key Performance Indicator

  • Test and calibrate equipment to ensure they meet product specifications and quality standards.
  • Conduct quality checks on machinery output to ensure that all products meet company quality standards.
  • Make necessary adjustments to maintain optimal machinery and equipment performance.
  • Implement continuous improvement practices to enhance machinery and equipment efficiency and product quality.
  • Collaborate with the quality control team to ensure the company standards are always met.
  • Ensure that the equipment performs at maximum efficiency with less than 0.5% rejection.
  • Ensure sufficient knowledge of all quality plans and procedures.

2.9 Planning

  • Takes responsibility for neatness and cleanliness of the workplace and the machinery or equipment that is worked on.

  • Ensures that the work area is clean after every task before equipment is handed over to production.
  • Participate in 5S activity, improvement, sustainability. Complete at least 4 activities per month.
  • Clean and neat work area and toolbox.

PREVIOUS/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/ ADDITIONAL SKILLS & DETAILS

 

  • Formal PLC training – must be able to understand, read, diagnose, and program PLC’s (Preferably OMRON), PLC experience is a must.
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

CANDIDATE PROFILE: QUALIFICATIONS / TECHNICAL SKILLS

 

  • Red Seal Millwright (minimum 2 years post Trade qualifications).
  • National Senior Certificate N4 or higher (Mechanical or electrical).
  • Strong mechanical and electrical aptitude with specific knowledge of manufacturing machinery and equipment.
  • Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings, machine manuals, and schematics.
  • Skilled in using hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment specific to manufacturing machinery and equipment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyse and resolve complex mechanical issues.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Good English communication.
  • Computer literate - Microsoft Office, Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
